Embedded in this new world are both tremendous opportunities and challenges driven by the services, products and processes that surround us. Increasingly, designers are being called on to provide thoughtful solutions outside of their conventional roles; to create and implement innovations that improve our human condition and our planet. Exposed 2010 > Design Research in Action seeks to break down barriers between traditional design disciplines and the rest of the world. Our goal is to bring designers together with leaders in other fields who share a common vision of creating positive change for society. We will explore design research’s ability to creatively respond to three critical challenges of our time:
SUSTAINABILITY
addressing environmental impacts and responsibilities of design
WELL-BEING
optimizing health and improving quality of life through design
PROSPERITY
designing for brighter economic futures
These three challenges will be examined through interaction with and discussion by a transdisciplinary panel of experts. Speakers, action teams, panel discussions, and workshops will center on developing/discussing actionable research and strategy for meeting these challenges from individual, community, and global perspectives.
Exposed 2010, the third annual Arizona State University Student Symposium, will be held on ASU’s downtown Phoenix campus from April 7–10, 2010. This state-of-the-art location offers high-tech, fully mediated facilities and a vibrant city neighborhood. Professionals, academics, and students from all fields are invited to join in this dynamic discussion and learning opportunity.
